For every cleaning need, a vacuum is always useful. From wide spaces to the crevices and hard to reach corners, a vacuum can do the task. What is a vacuum cleaner? What are the types of vacuum cleaners? What are the attachments that come with a vacuum cleaner?

A vacuum cleaner is a piece of equipment that uses an air pump that creates a partial vacuum to suck in dust and other mess from different surfaces such as draperies, floors, and upholstery. When the mess is sucked up, it goes to a dustbag or a cyclone for disposal.

Vacuum cleaners come in different varieties depending on the usage and preferences. To give you an idea which type of vacuum cleaner to buy, here are the main types of vacuum cleaners:

Five main types of vacuum cleaners

Each type of vacuum cleaners has a slightly specific function, although some of them have combined features and functions for more multi-functionality. Knowing the functions and features of each vacuum type help you choose the right kind that you need.

  • Upright

The upright vacuum cleaners are the most popular, most common types. When you hear about vacuum cleaners, you might imagine this type. It provides the strongest suction to clean up the entire house. It is easy to use and more functions and accessories. It can be used on both carpeted floors and bare floors.

  • Stick

If the upright type is the most powerful, the least powerful is the stick vacuum cleaner. This type is built with a stick-like handle and a thin body. The most advantage is it can go through narrow spaces and can clean hardwood floors, light carpeting, and area rugs. It can also be used in corners, closet spaces, and other hard-to-reach areas.

  • Canister

The canister vacuum cleaner tends to be the most expensive because it is technologically forward and has a versatile design. It is a combination of upright type because it is as powerful as the upright vacuum cleaner and of stick type because of its slender built.

  • Handheld

Handheld vacuums are perfect vacuums for cleaning hard-to-reach spaces, such as the crevices inside the cars. It is handheld and not a good vacuum for wide spaces as it would take much time. It can pick up dirt, dust, and any kind of mess on crevices and small areas.

  • Autonomous / Robot

The most technological advanced is the robot vacuum cleaner. It requires very little effort when using it because it roams freely around the house to suck up dirt and other kinds of mess. It saves time and energy. It can clean every area including the underneath of the couches. It becomes popular nowadays but one drawback is it comes at a very high price.

Vacuum attachments

The attachments that come with the vacuum cleaners make the vacuum cleaners more multi-functional. Sometimes, the attachments can be confusing especially if you are not familiar with them. To help you make the most out of each attachment, here are the vacuum attachments that usually come with vacuum cleaners:

  • Crevice tool

Crevice tool helps you get through the tight spots. Dirt in between sofa cushions, along baseboards, around the vents or radiators, car’s interiors, and more can be reached with the use of this attachment.

  • Dusting brush

Dusting brush is used for cleaning sensitive surfaces such as whisk window sills, framed art, lampshades, and more. It works great for vacuums with different suction settings.

  • Extension wand

Just like the crevice tool, the extension wand also provides you more reach. With extension wand, you can dust dangling furniture or the depths of appliances.

  • Upholstery tool

The upholstery tool is wide and often has a lint catching fabric strip for luring the dust from mattress, cushions, sofas, and chairs.
